Officer gets tailgated, knocks over fire hydrant.
Time: 6:30 p.m.
Location: 800 block of Division Avenue NE
Officer: Yohannes Ayalew
Incident Report: Officer Ayalew said that there was a white ford pickup truck that had followed him for ten blocks. He was tailgating him. The other vehicle would stop and then start very close behind Officer Ayalew’s vehicle. Officer Ayalew claims that when the vehicle finally passed him he thought that the other vehicle was going to hit his vehicle. So he then tried to avoid a collision. He turned into a driveway and accidentally hit the fire hydrant. At no time did he lose control of his vehicle. Officer Ayalew did not call the police because he called his supervisor as of 10:33. When I [Supervisor Vicki Pressley] arrived there, no vehicles were parked at that fire hydrant to obstruct his view or cause him to hit it. Officer Ayalew will be referred to defensive driving class.
