University of Iowa senior Mary LaRue and her two roommates had hardly settled into their new Bethesda apartment when a mandatory 48-hour-notice evacuation order came through. “Our resident adviser stopped by at 11 a.m. on a Saturday to tell us,” she says. “I don’t think she said anything about New Orleans at first.” In town for a semester organized by the Washington Center, a prominent intern mill, the three women called the center’s staff to protest—only to be informed that they were being displaced by four refugees from Tulane Law School. Washington Center spokesperson Jennifer Clinton says the Tulane students ultimately found their own digs, so the center will instead accommodate 15 undergraduates from Dillard University. That’s fine by LaRue. “I’m not upset that someone from New Orleans got my place,” she says.—Jeff Horwitz
