Paul Konerko and Scott Podsednik, Game 2, a couple of nights ago. David Ortiz, Games 4 and 5, last year’s ALCS. Shit, the Boston Red Sox, the entire 2004 season (I still get goosebumps when I type it). Adam Vinatieri—just Google his name plus “game-winning.” Henry Aaron, No. 715. Joe D. and the more than two months he went without going hitless. These are great sports moments. And then there are the mediocre moments (Eric Lindros’ career, maybe?). And the moderately boring ones (Yankees and Red Sox placing in that order year-in, year-out for oh, about the last decade). Competitive eating and its flagship Nathan’s Fourth of July hot-dog-eating contest? Not even on the continuum. And still, ESPN sends a play-by-play guy and a color man to cover the event. Not to be left out, local sports-radio station SportsTalk 980-AM will select the winners of today’s Verizon VoiceWing Buffalo-wing-eating contest. And you thought your 450-pound frame wouldn’t support athletic competition. The eating starts at 12:30 p.m. at Union Jack’s, 4915 St. Elmo Ave., Bethesda. Free. (301) 652-2561. (Mike Kanin)
