With regard to the article by Jason Cherkis about the feud among young people in Adams Morgan (“Playing for Keeps,” 11/4), the Washington City Paper once again takes a fairly complex community issue and not only misses the bigger point, but, in this instance, potentially puts an already at-risk youth in greater danger.
Instead of focusing the attention of the article on the failure of the Metropolitan Police Department to station an officer at the basketball tournament—as requested in writing by the event organizers and as had been the case in previous years—as well as the complete and total failure of the police detectives to pursue this case, Cherkis focuses his attention on “Little Jordan,” who himself is quoted as saying that the adults involved in this are “spreading the wrong message…just talking.”
Let’s just hope that all of Cherkis’ own spreading of the wrong message doesn’t make life any more difficult for “Little Jordan” and the other young people who are just trying to eke out a childhood in this ever-changing neighborhood.
