If I ever decide to design cute-slogan tees for aging metalheads, my first shirt would read, “THRASH BANDS DO IT FASTER FOR LONGER.” Yep, thrashers have some serious staying power. Slayer, Megadeth, and Metallica—they’re all still at it. And while Overkill never achieved the success of that thrash trinity, they are actively touring, and the first-wave, second-tier Noo Yawkers deserve some goats thrown their way for their sustained tenacity. Formed in the early ’80s from the ashes of a punk band called the Lubricunts, Overkill has endured despite lineup changes and major-label heartbreaks over the years. Hell, they even overcame poor critical response to their covers album called…ahem…Coverkill—I mean, look what happened to Guns N’ Roses after “The Spaghetti Incident?” If Overkill’s heavy-metal ironmen stick around any longer, maybe they can help me market my other T-shirt design—“IF YOU THINK IT’S TOO LOUD, WELL, YOU MAY HAVE A POINT BECAUSE TINNITUS IS A VERY PAINFUL CONDITION.” Bring earplugs when Overkill takes the stage with Prong, Eyes of Fire, Moab, Krass Judgement, and Burning Shadows at 6:30 p.m. at Jaxx, 6355 Rolling Road, West Springfield. $22.
