If, in the early ’80s, you’d picked the pop group whose drummer would go on to lead a critically acclaimed modern jazz/fusion combo, Journey would probably not have been it. Yet, that is precisely what Journey’s Steve Smith has done with Vital Information, a jazz supergroup whose other members come from stints with Billy Cobham, Chick Corea, and Santana. Over its 22-year career, Vital Information has developed a multifaceted sound that blends hard-hitting funk with inventive John Scofield–esque melodies and subtly avant-garde stylings; the group’s latest release, Come On In, ranges from the title track’s syncopated funk fused with vibrant, bluesy guitar lines to the wistful conjurations of “From Naples to Heaven,” while a respectable groove runs throughout the entire album. One must wonder, though, if they are ever tempted to break into “Any Way You Want It.” See Steve Smith and Vital Information at 8 p.m. & 10 p.m. at Blues Alley, 1073 Wisconsin Ave. NW. $20.
