There’s still time to nominate local icons for Best of D.C.
Brandi Carlile might safely declare herself the second coming of Elvis. Born a few years after the King fell off his throne, the young singer from rural Washington state has dark, smoldering, boyish looks—she resembles daughter Lisa Marie—to go with her ’50s-country-meets-’70s-rock sound. That quaver in her voice plus the near-yodel with which she caps off “Follow,” the opening track of her self-titled debut, catches hold of you and won’t let go. Maybe it should come as no surprise, then, that Carlile honed those big pipes as a backup vocalist for an Elvis impersonator. See if she’s got the thrusting hip and sneering lip to match her musical gifts when she performs at 7:30 p.m. at the Birchmere, 3701 Mount Vernon Ave., Alexandria. $17.50. (202) 397-7328.
