There’s still time to nominate local icons for Best of D.C.
Pity the poor playwrights competing in the Bethesda Arts & Entertainment District’s third-annual Play in a Day challenge: While the rest of their team is comfortably snoozing in bed, they’re hopped up on NoDoz, furiously trying to finish an impromptu script due by morning. But when the sun rises, it’s the actors’, directors’, and designers’ turn to hit the ground running for the second half of the relay. During an “interactive brainstorming session,” audience members will help determine the theme of the 10-minute plays six local theater troupes have just 24 hours to take from conception to performance. The following night, the teams will gather at Round House Theatre Bethesda to present their plays—and, true to the collaborative spirit, everyone shares equally in the prize at the finish line: a pat on the back, a celebratory drink, and a well-earned respite. The audience participation session begins at 8 p.m. Saturday, June 17, at the Hyatt Regency Bethesda, 1 Bethesda Metro Center, Bethesda. Free. The program of short plays begins at 8 p.m. at Round House Theatre Bethesda, 4545 East-West Highway, Bethesda. $10. (301) 215-6660. (Nick Green)
