As a former teacher in dcps, i was astounded and joyful when I worked at Ross Elementary School with the Smithsonian American Art Outreach Program. The early-morning greetings in English and Spanish, the colorful halls and classrooms, the parents who came with their home-country cooking, the incredible teacher, Margaret Hoo, and the principal, Ms. Gloria Smith. I believe that if the parents who were unhappy with Ross had had experiences with other elementary schools, they would have realized what a jewel they had right in front of their eyes. Their children could have had an experience with diversity that would have set them on the right path for the future—perhaps an experience that their parents did not have.
