Health Department Says: no hot water, no certified food supervisor

Business Says: We weren’t cooking, anyway. Along with selling cans of Steel Reserve, the store normally serves a menu of quickie snacks such as hamburgers, hot dogs, and fries. But for the past couple of months, the kitchen’s eight-burner Vulcan range has lain dormant. “We had a management change in early April,” owner William Lewis explains. “Then we were closed for about 30 days for renovations. So when the gas company worked on the pipes, there was no one to let them in and put the hot water on. It was just lighting the pilot light.” As for the absence of a food supervisor, Lewis says he had his certificate displayed but just didn’t have his photo identification. He took care of it the next day. “We didn’t get cited for roaches or infestation or cooking bad,” says Lewis. “I don’t see what the big deal was. They made it seem like a big deal.”
