The band runs through bass players like it blows by time signatures, but Sentai has finally settled on a lineup that kicks ass. Bassist Hugh McElroy, the band’s latest addition, brings the trio full circle: The D.C. music veteran formerly led Black Eyes, whose noisy sound is written all over Sentai’s dance-rock sensibility. Sentai is essentially all rhythm section: Collin Crowe alternates postpunk guitar duties with club-ready keyboard lines, but Justin Myers’ drumbeats are the driving force behind each song. Not to be shut out, Crowe syncopates his sing-shouty vocal lines, which build up, repeat, and hit every eighth note—adding another rhythmic weapon to the band’s booty-shaking arsenal. The dance-punk scene is awfully crowded these days, but Crowe & Co. aren’t simply keeping the pace—they’re setting it. Sentai performs with City Goats at 7:15 p.m. at Fort Reno, 3950 Chesapeake St. NW. Free. (703) 318-2197. (Kriston Capps)
