In 2004, Tucker Carlson claimed that Jon Stewart wasn’t funny in person, to which Stewart replied, “I know that, but tomorrow I will go back to being funny, and your show will still blow.” Was the dancing pundit right? When Stewart left his Daily Show desk to host the Academy Awards in March 2006, he flopped like Letterman and Rock before him. Encouraging viewers to stop pirating films, he pointed to the lavishly dressed celebs and said, “These are the people you’re stealing from.” The audience looked bored, but the next Monday Stewart went back to being funny. And although he might have been out of place on the red carpet, a town full of policy wonks is a natural fit for jibes such as “Hurricane Katrina is George Bush’s Monica Lewinsky. The only difference is that tens of thousands of people weren’t stranded in Monica Lewinsky’s vagina.” Enjoy thousands of moments of Zen when Stewart performs at 6:30 p.m. at Merriweather Post Pavilion, 10475 Little Patuxent Parkway, Columbia. $40–$75.
