History: This Marvelous Market outlet was closed in February 2001 for having unclean food-contact surfaces and equipment and having unprotected and uncovered food on display.
Health Department Says: no license, no certified food supervisor on duty
Business Says: It’s headquarters’ fault. Store manager Lisa Colbert says that the store’s business license was indeed expired, but she’d been trying to get it from Marvelous Market’s main office in Fairfax for a couple of months. “Whatever you gotta do, go ahead and get it done,” Colbert says she told the main office. “They shut us down in the middle of the day. I had stockholders calling me wanting to know why we were closed.” To her, the whole thing was an unnecessary headache. “It was just a simple business license that they needed to get off their butts and get,” Colbert says. After hearing of the store closure, headquarters had the license renewed that day. Because Marvelous Market orders its food fresh daily, Colbert says she couldn’t stock the store until the license was updated, so the market lost two days of business. Says Colbert: “When the health department tells you to do something, they’re not kidding.”
