It’s hard not to think that Tereu Tereu arrived to the songwriting game about a decade too late. With its over-earnest crooning, ringing melodies, and upbeat percussion (as well as occasional brass accompaniment), the Fredericksburg, Va., pop quartet would easily have found a home on one of the Deep Elm label’s late ’90s “Emo Diaries” compilations. Then again, the “Emo Diaries” earned their fair share of the blame for watering down the entire genre—so, maybe it’s a good thing that the band didn’t get together until a couple of years after the series was discontinued in 2004. Either way, Tereu Tereu certainly hasn’t had any trouble making a name for itself in just under two years of existence: The band recently finished recording an EP with the help of former Medications guitarist Devin Ocampo as well as ex-Dismemberment Plan members Jason Caddell and Travis Morrison. Tereu Tereu performs with Perfect Souvenir and the Bronze Episode at 9 p.m. at the Black Cat, 1811 14th St. NW. $8. (202) 667-7960.
