De Novo Dahl has plenty of good things to say about its hometown of Nashville, Tenn. According to the band’s Web site, Nashville has “[o]ne of the lowest cost-of-living rates in the U.S.,” an “[a]verage year-round high temperature [of] 70 Degrees F,” and, of course, is “[h]ome to rising pop stars and vintage swimwear connoisseurs De Novo Dahl.” But, given the five-piece band’s brand of uplifting, Flaming Lips-inspired rock, it’s hard to imagine that it doesn’t stick out like a sore thumb in the country music capital of the world. Which it does—in fact, that’s something the band is particularly proud of. Known for their ridiculous outfits, flamboyant onstage performances, and goofball concepts (think “beach-themed shows in the dead of winter” and “a spaghetti Western night” where plates of pasta are passed around), the members of De Novo Dahl revel in their ridiculousness—as evidenced by their signing to the metal-heavy label Roadrunner, which released the band’s Shout EP last summer. De Nova Dahl performs with the Luckouts and Sarah Azzara at 9 p.m. at the Velvet Lounge, 915 U St. NW. $8. (202) 462-3213.
