If you expect sugary bombast from an artist who splintered off from the irritatingly happy Polyphonic Spree, you’re at least half-right. Under the guise of St. Vincent, the bright-eyed former Spree guitarist, recent PLUG Award winner, and Warhol enthusiast Annie Clark creates music that at times reaches for her previous band’s bursts of freaky choral sunshine. But Clark has also traveled as a member of various other indie entourages; having performed with Sufjan Stevens and worked on the new Mountain Goats disc, she’s equally at home in folkier territory. A multi-instrumentalist with a range of musical influences to draw from, Clark tempers her blisteringly elated trill with twisted prog timing and no small helping of obscure melancholy. St.Vincent performs with Foreign Born at 8:30 p.m. at the Rock and Roll Hotel, 1353 H St. NE. $12. (202) 388-7625.
