City Paper is not for tourists
Boston’s Pretty & Nice flagrantly eschews the clean and sterile production values of most contemporary bands with a dominant post-punk influence. In fact, the tracks off the band’s 2007 self-released Blue & Blue EP sound like they were recorded on a Fisher-Price tape recorder. Whether this was intentional or the result of meager resources is anyone’s guess. But without this consistently rough finish, Pretty & Nice would probably come off as a little too erratic given its tendencies to shift between surf rock, pop, and dance roots without much reason or warning. Though all the genre-jumping might come off as overly ambitious at times, Pretty & Nice makes up for it with earnest renderings of their influences. Plus, there’s something kind of charming about a chowderhead aping a British accent.
Pretty & Nice performs with Exit Clov and Cobra Collective at 9:30 p.m. at Iota Club & Cafe, 2832 Wilson Blvd., Arlington. $10. (703) 522-8340.
