Even after Ben’s Chili Bowl closes up shop at 4 a.m. on weekends, Oohhs & Aahhs is frying up birds for another whole hour. From midnight to 5 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, the soul food joint rolls out a limited fried-chicken-and-waffles menu that pays homage to the late-late-night combo once favored by bleary-eyed denizens of the Jazz Age. Sorry, you can’t score mac ’n’ cheese or collards at this hour, but you can stir up a plate of fried catfish, home-style potatoes, and grits—if somehow you can skip the chicken and waffles. Grab your grub to go or enjoy it at the tiny, diner-style counter downstairs. You can even ascend to the VIP-like lounge, outfitted with couches and a flat-screen TV, and watch soccer games from time zones where respectable people are awake. You’ll shell out more here than you would for a jumbo slice, but that’s OK. You’ll probably be drunk anyway and won’t notice.
