The Cajun fries at Five Guys are not pretty. They do not arrive in some dainty paper cone; nor are they doused in truffle oil, sprinkled with fleur de sel, or dusted with herbs de Provence. These fried spuds are messy, ugly, and undeniably mouthwatering. The crispy, skin-on fries are dredged in Cajun spices, which give you an added bonus: They leave this finger-licking coating of red powder on your digits. Five Guys, of course, mostly attracts those hankering for a burger, but employees seem to understand that the fries are a reward all their own. The last time I ordered a burger and Cajun fries, the cook stuffed my already ample order into a grease-speckled bag—and then topped it off with an extra load of fries. It’s that combo of quantity and quality that keeps me coming back.
