On the Southwest corner of 14th and T Streets NW is a building that has gone through a lot of changes of late. Formerly the Church of the Rapture, the building was sold to become high-end condos during the real-estate boom, and then the plan changed to offices and stores. But currently, the building is the canvas for a wraparound mural. In January, Meat Market Gallery hosted its second annual “Performance Week,” which showcased the work of graffiti artists inside and outside the building. Roughly 35 graffiti artists were featured; Cory Stowers and Apoxyone spearheaded the cartoon-inspired mural, which features scenes of Ninja Turtles. D.C. pride is evident in a cityscape that includes a dome and even a Borf (which someone has vandalized with a splash of paint). The work is something “the rest of the community can kind of enjoy,” says Apoxyone. “Kids like it.”
