Every new condo building erected stands a good chance of filling up with first-time District residents. These newbies will not have had the chance to experience Fugazi at Fort Reno, they’ve never spent serious time at d.c. space, let alone remember the old 9:30 Club. They’ll need to seriously bone up on some local punk history, if only to avoid confusion when they hear people talk about Dischord or see the word “harDCore” in this fine publication. To get their local punk fix, new District citizens can find no better places than Smash Records and Crooked Beat—both now just a few doors away from each other in Adams Morgan. These stores know their local history and have the stock of cheap vinyl and CDs to prove it.
