Not a real tough choice here, since Martens is, no foolin’, the only new car dealership in all of the District.

Startling trivia: The nation’s capital has as many Major League Baseball franchises as it does automobile retail franchises, now that Martens’ last rival for this honor, Curtis Chevrolet/Kia on Georgia Avenue, is shuttering itself as City Paper goes to press.

“We had a good run, but you need a lot of space to run a car dealership, and that makes it cost-prohibitive in the city,” says Dudley Dworken, whose family has owned and operated Curtis since 1966. “I hope the neighborhood enjoyed us.”

Dworken says “a lot of developers” are looking to put up some sort of nonautomotive retail center on Curtis’ old grounds in Brightwood.
