There’s still time to nominate local icons for Best of D.C.
There are plenty of run-down buildings in this town. But few have the character and intrigue of what’s called the Wonder Bread Factory on S Street in Shaw. Hulking compared to the houses near it, the brick structure’s façade is divided into thirds by metal-framed windows. It looks like a factory that artists would drool over, with lofts dancing in their brains. There’s an extra dose of yesterday with the red “Wonder Bread” and blue “Hostess Cake” lettering that still runs along the top of building. The chained doors and boarded windows allow you to enjoy the building only from the outside but add mystery to the occasional glowing light coming from within. Time is ticking for enjoying the edifice in its dilapidated form; Douglas Development is moving forward with retail-and-office redevelopment.
