City Paper is not for tourists
About an hour and a half outside the city, in Washington, Va., is the Inn at Little Washington, where you can drop a small fortune and dine and sleep like a king. But if you want a country getaway with less pretension and less credit card debt, for the same driving time you can get to Shepherdstown, W.Va., a charming, artsy town a few miles up the Potomac River from Harper’s Ferry. A bed and breakfast, the Thomas Shepherd Inn, will give you similarly plush rooms in a more laid-back atmosphere. For a delicious dinner, take a short stroll to the historic Yellow Brick Bank, which serves American and North Italian food in a building that was indeed the town’s bank in the early 20th century. History, relaxation, fresh air, and a couple bucks left in your pocket. Eat that, Patrick O’Connell.
