One can’t help but wonder why a band as high-powered as the Cops would title its most recent record Free Electricity. Perhaps it’s wishful thinking on the band members’ part: With three different people splitting both guitar and vocal duties and a fourth on bass—and everyone’s amps and distortion pedals set on what sounds like full blast—the monthly electricity bill for the Seattle-based quintet’s practice space is probably astronomical. A feedback-laden take on contemporary post-punk, the Cops fall more on the hard-rocking side of the genre than it does the dance-inducing side. Sure, either way, neo-post-punk is all but dead in 2008—but the Cops are obviously intent on squeezing every last bit of juice out of it. The Cops perform with Bionicman at 9:30 p.m. at the Red and the Black, 1212 H St. NE. $10. (202) 399-3201.
