An in-demand sideman who’s worked with the likes of Norah Jones and Bill Frisell, Sex Mob bassist Tony Scherr is also an accomplished singer-songwriter. On his latest release, Twist in the Wind, he prefers to keep things simple: The album was entirely recorded in his home studio in Brooklyn, and he stuck mainly to first takes. Scherr’s avoidance of studio gimmickry doesn’t seem to have been borne out of simple frugality, though; shifting to guitar to play a set of lightly countrified tunes, Twist in the Wind is in keeping with Scherr’s ongoing quest to keep his music straightforward and unadulterated. For this show he’ll perform acoustic guitar, backed by Golden Palominos drummer Anton Fier and bassist Rob Jost. TONY SCHERR PERFORMS WITH THE WORLD THAT SUMMER AND 2090 AT 9:30 P.M. AT THE VELVET LOUNGE, 915 U ST., $8 (202) 462-3213.
