DeVotchKa is an eclectic affair, blending Greek, Spanish, punk, and Eastern European folk influences into a debonair coalition of the willing—as in, willing women into states of undress. The Denver-based quartet started out as background music for burlesque dancers, which raises an eyebrow, as the accordion isn’t exactly the sexiest instrument. However, give one to DeVotchKa’s Shawn King and the next thing you know Dita Von Teese is shedding her hot pants. (That’s certainly not an accomplishment “Weird Al” Yankovic can boast.) Despite the lascivious beginnings, the band has since managed to eke its way into some arguably more wholesome outlets, such as its contributions to the Little Miss Sunshine soundtrack as well as its breakout placement in the trailer for Everything Is Illuminated. Although the latter came and left theaters with little fanfare, it thankfully gave DeVotchKa’s career a well-deserved jolt. DeVotchKa performs with Basia Bulat and Fancy Trash at 9 p.m. at the 9:30 Club, 815 V St. NW. $15. (202) 393-0930.
