There’s still time to nominate local icons for Best of D.C.
If there was ever a time when the independent music scene needed Kill Rock Stars to step up and put out a strong and raucous band of females, it’s now. Frankly, nobody seems to pay attention to a female artist unless she’s got one emaciated foot in the grave; this fascination with oh-so-tragic women makes bands such as New Bloods so refreshing. Though the three ladies who comprise the Portland, Ore., trio may be tired of hearing their post-punk stylings and creative use of violins compared to the Raincoats, being likened to such innovative icons is certainly not an insult. Sure, it’s unfair to pigeonhole them into carrying the torch of the usual grrrl suspects such as Sleater-Kinney and Bikini Kill, but—in an era where Amy Winehouse is lionized—their fierce energy is beyond called for. New Bloods performs with Equinox and Turboslut at 9 p.m. at the Black Cat, 1811 14th St. NW. $8. (202) 667-7960.
