In the quarter century since their inception as a supporting band for guitarist Robben Ford, the Yellowjackets have gone through various lineup changes. The current formation—which includes bassist Jimmy Haslip, drummer Marcus Baylor, keyboardist (and co-founder) Russell Ferrante, and saxophonist Bob Mintzer—has been together for close to eight years and has recorded several albums, including Lifecycle, their recent collaboration with former Miles Davis guitarist Mike Stern. In a live setting, the band plays an energetic set that shows various musical influences, stemming from the members’ successful careers as sidemen and bandleaders in their own right, which clearly contributes to the collective sound. “We are not jazz snobs,” Haslip explains over the phone. “This is an experimental group, and we get inspiration and motivation from what we feel good about, and we write music accordingly.” The Yellowjackets perform at 8 and 10 p.m. at Blues Alley, 1073 Wisconsin Ave. NW. $32.50.
