No Wave heroine and eternal teenage-vampire diarist Lydia Lunch once said “The only thing worse than a guitar is a guitarist.” If you believe that, then Major Stars will make for pretty boorish company. The Boston-based sextet has no fewer than three members currently wielding an ax—usually a reliable indicator of wanky psychedelic solos and self-indulgent feedback drone. But in this case—well, it holds true here, but at least Major Stars are at the acme of the wanky psychedelic solo game. Wayne Rogers, Kate Biggar, and Tom Leonard do not so much solo as call down the ghost of Jimi Hendrix via three-way guitar séances that begin above 12th fret and plunge head first into fuzz-pedal infinity. And that, in all honestly, sounds better than an evening with Lydia Lunch. Major Stars performs with Thalia Zedek, Kohoute, and Giraffes? Giraffes! at 9:30 p.m. at the Velvet Lounge, 915 U St. NW. 87. (202) 462-3213.
