Give Built to Spill’s A&R guy at Warner Bros. some credit: Back in the late ’90s, he had balls. With only a single song clocking in under five minutes and a sound that staked an unlikely middle ground between C86 twee and neckbeard-coated bar rock, the band’s major label debut, Perfect From Now On, must have been a hard sell. Lines like, “We’re special in other ways/Ways our mothers appreciate,” could only have flummoxed a room full of execs brought up on Anthony Kiedis’ socks-only approach to rock catharsis. ButPerfect From Now On found its audience. If you were in college in 1997, when the record was released, you made out to it; if you’re in college now, you probably just finished making out to it. Swap spit again tonight as the band performs Perfectin its entirety.
