Until recently, Growing hardly seemed like an ambitious band. Its members were just a couple of blissed-out Portland, Ore., longhairs lounging on the cover of Arthur magazine and playing New Age guitar feedback for the lentils-and-hoodies crowd. But a few years and a move to Brooklyn have changed all that. On its most recent record, All the Way, Growing plugs its panoply of guitar pedals into a drum machine, imbuing its music with a newfound sense of pulse and drive. Calling it techno wouldn’t be totally off-base; the band’s songs no longer drone but bounce, wobble, and maybe even rave. Growing’s music is finally driven instead of sounding merely overdriven.
