There’s still time to nominate local icons for Best of D.C.
The Legendary Shack Shakers play the greatest theme songs that never made it onto a Quentin Tarantino soundtrack. Once strictly a rockabilly act, the Nashville quartet now irreverently combines surf, punk, gospel, country, and rock for a greasy, retrograde sound. Frontman/harpist J.D. Wilkes occasionally engages in acts of onstage mayhem that rivals the antics of GG Allin (videos from a gig in Germany show Wilkes galloping around the stage in his suspenders with a little person from the audience riding his shoulders). But unlike bands that make headlines exclusively for their bad behavior, the Shack Shakers taken a lesson from their longtime mentor the Reverend Horton Heat and put the music before the antics.
THE LEGENDARY SHACK SHAKERS PERFORM WITH PINE HILL HAINTS AT 8:30 P.M. AT THE ROCK AND ROLL HOTEL, 1353 H ST. NE. $12. (202) 388-7625.
