There’s still time to nominate local icons for Best of D.C.
Indie-rock is kind of a beauty-before-age racket, but experience ought to count for something, and Brendan Canning has a lot of it under his belt. In 1999 he co-founded Broken Social Scene with fellow sensitive Canadian beardo Kevin Drew, but for nearly 10 years before that, Canning’s CV included scrappy bands, DJ gigs, and even a stint in one-hit-wonder Len. The 18 years that Canning spent working up to his first solo record, Something for All of Us…, have clearly paid off—time has taught the multi-instrumentalist to tweak his guitar pedals pretty well and to get funky without sounding completely awkward (a rare feat in indie-rock, Canadian or otherwise). All of which gives him the right to record a song called “Been at It So Long.”
