There’s still time to nominate local icons for Best of D.C.
The violence associated with the Scandinavian black metal scene of the ’90s (numerous alleged church burnings and homicides) has long since passed, leaving Sweden’s Watain to carry the torch for Satanic metal without shame. The band’s most recent album, last year’s Sworn to the Dark, is chock-full of classic melodic black metal, and the band keeps it old-fashioned onstage too: Watain’s over-the-top show includes pig’s blood and animal heads impaled onstage on inverted crosses. Though the tightly enforced venue rules at Jaxx will likely limit such excesses, it’s Halloween—not to mention the second-to-last show of this tour—so something creepy is bound to happen. If you’d prefer not to smell like dead mammal after this show, better stand well away from the stage.
WATAIN PERFORMS WITH WITHERED, BOOK OF BLACK EARTH, ANCIENT SACRIFICE, RECENTLY VACATED GRAVES, AND VALHALLA AT 7 P.M. AT JAXX, 6355 ROLLING road, SPRINGFIELD. $20. (703) 569-5940.
