While the label may not be entirely accurate, it’s not hard to see why Chicago’s Kidz In the Hall have been lumped in with hip-hop’s new class of “hipster rap” by the blogosphere. Skinny jeans? Check. Oversized shades? Check. Pretentious obsession with being cool? And then some. But fashion sense alone doesn’t represent the duo’s music. Their modern take on old-school party rap resists easy classification; MC Naledge doesn’t idolize guns and street hustle as much as simply looking fly, mirroring Kanye’s cocky pursuit of the good life over Double-O’s classic-style production. But despite showing a political side by endorsing Obama in the track “Work to Do,” glitz and glamour still dominate their oeuvre. And though the duo may deny the association, “hipster rap” at least sounds better than the term they flaunt on their latest full-length, The In Crowd: “Snob Hop.”
