Schlitz

Where Spotted: The Red Derby, 3718 14th St. NW

Price: $2/12-oz. can

yes we can: High Life hipsters, prepare to be converted. The classic Schlitz lager won’t stand up to a good micro, but this full-flavored king of the bargain bin will knock the pants off of tinny cousins like Pabst Blue Ribbon. (Miller produces all three of the aforementioned.)

what we brew is secret: Dear fellow denizens of northern Columbia Heights: I sincerely am sorry for breaking mum on our beloved neighborhood bar. But after more than a year of service to the community, the Derby remains one of few places offering $2 beers without: a) feeling like a bomb shelter; b) offering pupusas. The movies play with sound, and the board games have all their pieces. So let’s open our arms and welcome the rest of the metro area. (And don’t worry, the people of NoVa have assured me they’ll come only on weekends.)
