Peak Organic Espresso Amber Ale

Where Spotted: The Reef, 2446 18th St. NW (draft); bottles around town

Price: $5/pint, or around $8/4-pack in stores

The Sipping Point: When you heard last week that MillerCoors was decaffeinating Sparks, its revered party serum, did you run to the store and sweep up every bottle of booze that might pack a jolt? Put these bottles down, then: Espresso Amber is not for washing down your crushed-up Ecstasy. It’s a java-tinged elixir that wants to be sipped.

Not Just for Breakfast Anymore? Red Bull derision aside, this beer is delicious. Pop the cap, and its sweet, coffee-ice cream aroma wafts across the room. Coffee beers are nearly always stouts or porters, black beers whose own roastiness marries with the beans’. But this amber is more of a blank slate, accepting the gamut of coffee flavors from a sweet and creamy body to a dry, toasty finish. After a few sips, it actually tastes less like beer and more like cold-brewed coffee. If only breakfast was this good.
