Rosetta Stoned is not an educational software program that teaches people how to order up weed in different languages, although someone should get on that. It’s the name of a D.C.-based hip-hop duo that has been blessing fans in the city and beyond with insanely dense wordplay and twisty, demented production. The duo is touting its newest mix tape, Fungi,a collection of tracks with varying influences, from contemporary electronica to social rappers Dead Prez and Talib Kweli. Although the group’s name and its song titles (“Fungi,” Witchcraft”) suggest baked-out tracks and slurred delivery, rappers Mental Stamina (a near-illiterate turned Nietzsche-lover) and Stoney Ashes (a former graduate student in medievalism) are far from fried and listless. Their recordings and stage shows are frenzied and energetic—guaranteed to move even the most chemically altered bodies.
