The Capitol Movement Project is slowly creating a space for D.C. Teens where hip-hop thrives without the violence, drugs, and sexism that often taint the commercial product. At Dance Place’s sixth annual Black Expressions: Hip Hop Festival, Capitol Movement will be joined by local crews that include Aysha Upchurch’s Life, Rhythm, Move Project and DCypher Dance. And for fans who can’t make it to an event without the promise of celebrity, the Boogie Bots Crew (from America’s Best Dance Crew) will also be performing—here’s hoping the local acts give ’em a run for their moves.
THE BLACK EXPRESSIONS: HIP HOP FESTIVAL TAKES PLACE FRIDAY, FEB. 20, THROUGH SUNDAY, FEB. 22, AT DANCE PLACE, 3225 8TH ST. NE. $50. (202) 269-1600.
