Leonidas (Aris Servetalis) is a pissant cop who spends his days on a remote island in the Aegean flagging down naked sunbathers and being ignored by scofflaw drivers. What he’d give for the chance to bust heads among the crime syndicates of Athens! But he lacks the necessary “connections,” his chief tells him, and should get his head out of the clouds. Things start looking up after the mysterious death of the village drunk, a has-been footballer named Zacharias, whose illegitimate, too-gorgeous-for-words daughter Aggeliki (Viki Papadopoulous)—the island’s local-girl-made-good—returns from her job hosting Greece’s hit morning variety show to mourn the man whose paternity was all hushed-up to begin with—and to fall in love, naturally, with Leo. Director/writer Christos Georgiou’s slow-unfolding plot thrives on understated visual gags, including one in which Leonidas literally puts himself in the dead man’s shoes, while ample silence and the long pan allow faces, and the immaculate landscape, to speak volumes. Servetalis steals the show as an expressionless but compassionate protag, and a lo-fi but sweeping soundtrack underscores innocuous moped chases. Come for the atmosphere, stay for the love affair—and by the end, you won’t really mind that Zacharias’ death might not have been all that mysterious, after all.
