Clipper City Heavy Seas Loose Cannon Hop3 Ale
Where Spotted: Galaxy Hut, 2711 Wilson Blvd., Arlington
Flat-lining: My ongoing love affair with cask beer led me to this special sampling of Clipper City’s IPA, poured straight from the firkin. Falling directly from quarter-barrel spigot to glass, like Gatorade from God’s own sideline cooler, this fresh IPA swaps its piney bitterness for more rounded, floral hop flavors. Waves of bagel malts roll across the palate, prodded along by the cask’s wondrous not-quite flatness. Uncarbonated beer? Damn right, and it’s firkin time you try it.
Shiver Me Liver! Meanwhile, it was my ongoing love affair with pirate jokes that led me to revisit Loose Cannon. The cask version might be a white whale, but the Metro area is awash with plunder-worthy six-packs. Hailing from the port of Baltimore, this IPA is good enough to coax a seafaring drinker into trading his scurvy for cirrhosis.
