Summer is the season of low art’s triumph. If you have any pretensions regarding the trashier end of pop culture, it’s time to beat them into submission.

Come September, the leaves will turn, the weather will cool, and it will be time to enrich yourself with visits to the Kennedy Center to see the National Symphony Orchestra perform selected snooze-fests by Bach, Rachmaninoff, or Mozart.

For the next couple of months, though, the NSO’s repertoire is largely inspired by Harry Potter, Super Mario Bros., and the Jaws tetralogy.

This is the season of the Big Gulp, the ill-advised Terminator sequel, and, most importantly, the summer concert.

Summer is when rock bands defy their shelf lives and decide to hit the stage one last time. Again. Be they Wang Chung, Creedence Clearwater Revisited, or one of two single-surviving-member lineups of Badfinger, the has-beens pop up, like a VH1-sponsored game of Whack-A-Mole, during the summer. No matter who you are, it’s likely that a band you used to like, or are now ashamed to admit that you still like, will be coming to town.

It’s also the time of music festivals—those sprawling events spent in the hot sun, drinking $6 plastic cups of beer, watching a bluegrass show that is also, somehow, a chili cook-off. And as soon as the temperature rises, jam bands roll into town, their music encouraging you to defy smoking bans and take a toke to get you through the last few minutes of “When the Circus Comes.”

Because there is no use in trying to fight the bawdiness of the summer concert season, Washington City Paper instead provides you with a road map for navigating it and enjoying the special mix of heat, alcohol, and music. But we can’t safeguard against heatstroke, traffic snarls, or your getting bumped around by a guy in mandals pushing his way to the front of the stage—some things about summer concerts just can’t be helped. —Aaron Leitko
