There’s still time to nominate local icons for Best of D.C.
Once the sun set on the ’90s alternative rock explosion, what was a young disaffected songwriter to do? Some kicked around waiting for a revival, while others turned toward “sociological experiments” remixed by Timbaland. Then there’s A. A. (Scott) Bondy, former singer of the never-quite-made-it grunge-ish band Verbena, who recently reinvented himself as a down-country troubadour. Pledging one’s allegiance to the church of Hank Williams via Ryan Adams is hardly a novel conceit considering fellow Americana revivalists Lucero (among countless others) have been at it since Bondy was seeking production advice from Dave Grohl. Improbably, the recently re-released Americans Hearts makes a compelling case for Bondy’s second wind. While its songs tackle lofty ideas of faith, redemption and loss, Bondy’s creaky voice grounds the weighty subject matter with a heft that doesn’t come easy. Look for someone in Iota’s crowd to be saved. Or something like that.
A.A. BONDY PERFORMS AT 9 P.M. AT IOTA CLUB & CAFE, 2832 WILSON BOULEVARD, ARLINGTON. (703) 522-8340.
