At her high school in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park neighborhood, Avery Klein-Cloud is diligent in the classroom and dedicated on the track, with a college scholarship very much within her grasp. Avery’s home life, though, is not quite so vanilla. Adopted by white Jewish lesbians, Avery is black, with a Korean younger brother and a multiethnic older brother (their family nickname is “the United Nations”). All’s well until Avery decides to contact her birth mother. What follows is an identity crisis that shatters her reality and sends her couch-surfing around the city, trading her white upbringing for black friends and an introduction to black culture.
