At her high school in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park neighborhood, Avery Klein-Cloud is diligent in the classroom and dedicated on the track, with a college scholarship very much within her grasp. Adopted by white Jewish lesbians, Avery is black, with a Korean younger brother and a multiethnic older brother (their family nickname is “the United Nations”).
