In olden days, people copied hilarious, humiliating VHS tapes and put them in the mail to share with other people who loved hilarious, humiliating VHS tapes. Within this microculture, Jack Rebney was legendary. Then came YouTube, and the guy known interchangeably as the “Winnebago Man” and the “Angriest Man in the World” hit full-on cult status. In outtakes from a 1989 industrial video, Rebney’s exquisite use of “fuck,” whether in exclamation or gerund form, hit a chord. Twenty years later, Austin filmmaker Ben Steinbauer finds Rebney living in a cabin in California. What follows is a classic This American Life quest: What is the meaning of Jack Rebney? Have we made too much of him? Who is this guy, really? Although both the film’s arc and Steinbauer’s narration are largely predictable, the doc clips along at an entertaining pace. Plus: Jack’s a Cheney-hating coot with a dog named Buddha. As profile subjects go, you could do worse.
