Pop Star on Ice shows the glamorous and slightly eccentric behind-the-scenes life of three-time national champion Johnny Weir. Filmmakers David Barba and James Pellerito follow Weir from the Winter Olympics in Torino to the runways of New York Fashion Week to his practice rink in Newark, Del. Along the way, we see him tumble and soar, but what makes Weir an interesting subject to profile is not his skill on the ice but his commentaries on his life as a less-than-successful competitive ice skater, expressed with an attitude guaranteed to upset the conservative judges and officials. Whether he is debating changes to a costume in order to look more like Jesus and less like Rambo or interviewing his best friend in a bubble bath, Weir makes a hilarious narrator and reminds the audience what is so entertaining about grown men jumping around in glitter.
