Kathy Griffin started out with a decent standup routine in which she riffed on how obnoxious her voice is, then used that success to irritate her way onto Suddenly Susan, which is really where her career could have ended—ala fellow funny redhead Vicki Lewis of NewsRadio. Instead, Griffin rebranded herself as the world’s greatest expert on famous people, launching an award-winning television show called My Life on the D-List, performing standup, writing a book, and always rebutting her growing fame with the humble claim, most recently made in an interview with the Associated Press, that she’s “flattered at the suggestion that I could even be a C-minus.”
