I suppose someone in the Williams family has to try and make up for Hank Jr.’s so-right-it’s wrong atrocity “McCain-Palin Tradition.” It’s just that Hank Williams III seems to be trying a little too hard to reclaim the outlaw vibe for the clan with songs like “Wild & Free” from last year’s Damn Right Rebel Proud. However, Hank III’s particular brand of hellbilly cowpunk is as popular as ever—Damn Right peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart. His shitkicker shtick is so real that he was banned from the Black Cat after some of his rowdier friends and fans refused to settle down. If I have to choose between an ode to the GOP ticket or G.G. Allin (III’s “P.F.F.,” standing for “Punch Fight Fuck”), I guess it’d have to be the latter. It would be nice if there were some middle ground, but, from Grampa on down, the family has been anything but moderate.
Hank Williams III & Assjack play with Lucky Tubb; the concert starts at 7 p.m. at the 9:30 club, 815 V St. NW. $20. (202) 265-0930.
