Jack White likes it dirty, and with the Dead Weather the anachronistic audiophile finally has a mud pit in which to wrastle. Dead Weather’s debut, Horehound, finds him alongside Kills frontwoman Alison Mosshart, Queens of the Stone Age guitarist Dean Fertita, and Raconteurs bassist Jack Lawrence, providing Joplin-esque soul-ranting, fat, buzzing guitar riffs, and White’s drumming, all mixed with the maximum amount of canned tape hiss and vinyl crackle. Everything he’s done with the Stripes and Raconteurs—from experimenting with analog recording methods to relocating to Memphis—was preparation for the Dead Weather, wherein sex and moonshine bring out the darkness in White.

THE DEAD WEATHER PERFORMS WITH THE SCREAMING FEMALES AT 7 P.M. AT THE 9:30 CLUB, 815 V ST. NW. $35. (202) 265-0930.
